I'm most of the way through Conquering Gotham I find that it reads a bit like The Devil in the White City, but that the "plot" --if you can call history a plot -- jumps around much less. (There's some character overlap, too, but not so much in the really central people.) I ...

Finished Devil in the White City this morning, and now I'm going to dive into the Dead Zone and my collection of Chicago short stories...I need to get these back to the library, so I'm doubling up my books now.

#122 Hi Coloradogirl14. I tried to read Devil in The White City but lost interest. I see this book is read by many LT members. Maybe I'll give it another try. I highly recommend The Dead Zone. There is an older movie with Christopher Walken as the main character. It is very good.

Still making my way through Devil in the White City and finding it much more enjoyable the second time around! A slow read, but extremely entertaining. Although I am itching to dig into The Dead Zone by Stephen King, which I've never read before.

Dinner with a friend turned into a trip to B&N, and he was nice enough to pay for some books I wanted: -Devil in the White City -Reading like a Writer (hardcover and only $4. I love the clearance table) -Women and Fiction

Devil in the White City?

Another bit of fun after reading Devil in the White City is to go to eBay and search for Chicago World's Fair post cards. Lots of great views, especially of the ferris wheel. No, I didn't buy any, but I really enjoyed the visuals.

#170 Hi, doc ~ Devil in the White City is brilliant, isn't it!?! It tied with Team of Rivals as my favorite nonfiction (and maybe of any books, including fiction) in 2007. It really is one of my all-time favorite nonfictions, and this from someone who doesn't usually read true crime books. ...

Finished The Devil in the White City (yay! I really liked it. Also, one of the libraries on my campus has a copy of a World's Columbian Exposition GUIDE! From 1892 and everything! I desperately want to see it, but unfortunately it's somewhere in the archives that I can't get to. :( Aw.). I think ...

#3, 6, 7 I had to read Devil in the White City for one of my college courses, and I LOVED it, which really surprised me, since I usually don't go for historical nonfiction. Maybe it's because I've grown up in the Chicago area, so I have a deep love for the city, but I thought it was FASCINATIN ...

#3 I just picked up Devil in the White City today from a local thrift store, glad to know its interesting. I still reading Middlemarch, yes still, but enjoying it a lot. I am also just starting The Forgery of Venus by Michael Gruber. I liked The Book of Air and Shadows so I have ...

I'm currently about 100 pages into The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson and am really enjoying it. I like reading about what life was like way back when, and the way Larson weaves the characters' lives together is interesting.

... photo is of my place. No picture of Styx--they always seem to come out to be a black blob with no eyes or face. The Devil in the White City is sort of a strange juxtaposition of the stories of the great engineers/architects of the Chicago's World's Fair with a true crime story of a ...

I second Devil in the White City. What a brilliant book! I also loved Team of Rivals: the Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln and Caesar, Life of a Colossus by Goldsworthy. Oh, and also The Ghost Map, the Story of London's Deadliest Epidemic and how it changed the way we think about ...

redapple in Early Reviewers : Arthurian Omen (Apr 30, 2008, 9:57am)

Two mysteries in one. One I easily solved, the other I was misled by the red herrings. Reminded me slightly of Larson's Devil in the White City and Pearl's The Dante Club, but not quite up to par. More simplistic style, more like an Agatha Christie maybe. The short chapters and jump in ...

... girl", Mary Rogers. Stashower has written a very readable book, similar in style to Erik Larson (Thunderstruck and The Devil in the White City). He uses the murder of Mary Rogers to explore New York and gives the reader a feel for the era while examining how murders were investigated in ...

Devil in the White City is good, and the 9/11 Commission Report is surprisingly readable. I have read both Harry Potters but don't own them (bought them for my nephew, and carefully read them before shipping them). I have My Life but haven't found time to read it. Not a great Clinton fan, ...

... members of the Underground resistance movement in Poland during WWII. It is quite good, the writing reminds me a bit of Devil in the White City, but the passages explaining surrounding people, events, and culture are better connected to the story.

... read it to my godson 7 years ago, and hope to read it to my grandchild in another 7 years or so. :) I really loved Devil in the White City. It's non-fiction that reads better than most of the novels on this list (adult ones, at any rate, except MAYBE the Marquez, which I don't think I'v ...

I've never read The Devil in the White City but my wife who is nuts for true crime, especially serial/mass murders, did. She read every other chapter.

... if I take a trip out to Cape Cod this summer....) To throw another log on the proverbial fire, I'm also drawn to toss Devil in the White City by Erik Larson into the mix. Covering an even later era, the richness of detail brings further depth and action to the account so that it ...

Started Thunderstruck by Erik Larson but find it's not grabbing me like Devil in the White City did. It's early days (i.e., chapters) yet, though, so I'll give it a couple more chapters before I decide whether to go on with it.

Cool. I'll line up The Devil in the White City as my next book.

The Devil in the White City is fantastic. Larson's history of the Chicago World's Fair is almost as fascinating as that of the serial murderer preying upon its tourists.

... I loved Word Freak. Right now I'm reading Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers and I have The Devil's Teeth and The Devil in the White City on my ever growing TBR pile.

#55 - Yes Mrs. Lee I think I'm in the minority with not liking The Devil in the White City, as I've read many stellar reviews from fellow LTers. I just cannot seem to get into it and I've been trying since Christmas. I found it unbearably dry and monotonous a little more than one third of the ...
